Bishopbriggs Banksy - A Tight Knit Community

Updated: Dec 30, 2021

Streetlights and post-boxes in Bishoprbiggs have been ‘yarn-bombed’ by a mystery knitter, over the last few months.

There have been knitted and crotchet designs popping up in the town of Bishopbriggs recently, spreading messages of hope and positivity. It is still unknown to the public who is behind the crafty creations that have been seen from wrapped around lampposts to on top of post-boxes and benches. However, members of the community have affectionately named the anonymous artist ‘Briggsy’, aptly named after the renowned Banksy.

As many more people are taking to the streets on their daily walks, families have used the creations as a fun trail for young ones. The street art has certainly brought a little colour to these seeming dark days.

Natalie Connor, mum of two and a Bishopbriggs resident, has been taking her daughters out through the snow to try and spot some of the yarn-bombings. She said: “what a beautiful gesture and little sign of love to keep us going.”

Although the people of Bishopbriggs are appreciative of the efforts of the ‘Briggsy’, some enjoy that their identity is a mystery. Beverly Cook, from Bishoprbiggs, said: “I hope the sneaky knitter is never revealed, as it makes it so much more interesting and fun.”

Correspondingly, Briggsy agrees. They revealed themselves to me, for an interview. They have asked for their identity to be kept anonymous. When I asked why they would like to remain anonymous, they replied: “It is just about giving people a wee smile, I think telling people feels like I want praise and that takes away from the innocence of it.”

Briggsy claims they have knitted or crotched designs for eighteen post boxes, fifteen lamp posts and three benches. Their contributions have certainly lit up dark times. And it seems that Briggsy has inspired others. Briggsy said, "There’s a couple of lamp posts with initials on that I didn't do and then someone else made a hearts basket, it's lovely that others are joining in and everyone seems to like them, cheers the place up a bit."

Briggsy's identity remains a mystery, but the impact that they have had on Bishopbriggs is very clear. They have spread colour and cheer throughout the town, in a time that we most need it.
